First of all, for me, I'll leave the default catalogs as they are and copy which catalog is closest to spec/catalog I need to build, for example ASME. Just sharing my point of view based on what i have experienced so far, thanks. Network share with all of our catalogs, lds and testing specs. Past that there's not much on the organization side.

When you use a catalog to build a spec that catalog is opened anytime you use the spec so you could be left waiting if you dump a massive amount into one catalog.Ĥ) Our specs are based off of the clients specifications so each client has a central location for all their specs that is linked for all of their projects. Also if you exclude a size of a component when you later enable it it will have the catalog description.ģ)The only issue you may run into is catalog size and load time.

If yo do a spec update from the catalog to the spec it will wipe out description changes and is spec wide. There's not really a right or wrong way to this.Ģ) I don't worry about the additional description information unless I'm building a catalog that I absolutely know it's something I'll use enough to make it worth it.

Generally speaking any tip you could share about how your catalogs and specs are organized in your company would be appreciated. I am trying to keep things as tidy as possible and avoid issues in the future.ġ) I'd say build similar items in the related catalogs. If you create your own catalogs, do you have just one catalog with everything you need or do you break them down in some manner? Does it matter?Ĥ. Is it better to create catalogs where the components are exactly as you want them to appear in the specs (description, material, etc.), or to use the defaults and then overwrite if needed at the spec level? My understanding is that any update of a spec based on a modified catalog will wipe all the customization that may have been done at the spec level, making this option unappealing.ģ. If components that you need for a spec are not part of the catalogs that come with P3D by default (ASME, AWWA, etc.), is it better to create a new catalog from scratch, to add to a default catalog, or to copy a default catalog and modify the copy?Ģ.
